What Is ECU? Engine Control Unit better known as ECU is actually the name given to a computer which takes the charge of everything that happens in the car engine - the ignition period, what is the quantity of air and fuel muddled up together, when does the turbo strikes in and so on. All these synchronizations are stored in the ECU in the form of maps.

What is ECU remapping? The synchronizations stored in the ECU in the form of maps are accessed by using a specialized instrument or software, which reads the maps that are stored in the ECU beforehand. The software finds for the optimal settings available for any given car and then reprograms the ECU with the new and optimized maps. This is known as remapping.

What is the time schedule required for remapping? The entire process of remapping and tuning takes about 30 - 60 minutes depending upon your car's ECU. Specialized equipment is used while remapping the ECU and the equipment for tuning is plugged in to the car's ECU and the software is allowed to gain access into the computer's control unit and figure out the required optimal settings to remap the ECU.

Does remapping pose any kind of threat to the car? The remapping process is purely restricted to the ECU of the car which is entirely based on the software and hence there is only a negligible amount of threat to the car. It is highly improbable, but still if something happens then the company which has undertaken the task of remapping should replace it on their own. Well, this criterion should be discussed and agreed upon much ahead of sending your car to remapping.
